May 27, 1999 Day 12 Today we left Liverpool and made our first stop in Chester, which is back in Wales. The old part of this city still has evidence of the Romans and the Saxon. The old wall still goes all the way around it and I had enough time to walk the whole thing. There were some great old streets and this town reminded me of York with tons more people. I found a street Named Eastgate which is always fun to see. There is a great old Cathedral there and the stain class and Mosaics were quite impressive.
Llangollen is the next town that we stopped in. (From what I can gather you say the Llan in Llangollen like 'clan'. So it would sound like clangollen if that helps at all.) Again most of the towns that we are hitting now are more for shopping and as always old buildings can be found and looked at. I do feel this tour and myself winding down. Keith and I did get away from the crowds in Llangollen and found a small kitchen that made some very good food.
After lunch we are off again and this time it is to Ludlow. Again a shopping town which does have a castle that neither of us are willing to pay to go in and see for 30 minutes. So we choose to go in this old house and have a look around. The best thing about this house is that the couple who own it are trying to restore it back to the way it was in its prime. The first things that hits you when you go in is that they are warming the first room with big chunks of coal which give off a certain odor. The flames are small but the heat is very warm. The sad thing about this place is that all the money that this couple have had has gone into that house. They have even had to sell the furniture that they had in it to keep it open to the public this year. The don't get any funding and are not sure if they are going to be able to make it on the admission alone this year. So friends if you could make out your checks... Just kidding. The first part was serious I hope that they will be able to keep it going.
Next stop for the day was back into Wales and to the town of Llandrindod Wells. This town is in the middle of no where and reminds me of Strathpeffer, Scotland. We had a great room and shortly after getting there we made our way to dinner and than decided not to eat with the group. Why? Well because the pool was closing at 8pm and we would miss the chance to enjoy the pool if we had dinner with everyone else. The pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna were awesome. Dinner at the fish and chip cafe was great. The small fair and a round of bummer cars was crazy. This is how we ended our evening. I could go for several evenings like that. Time for bed and three more tomorrow. I hope that you are keeping up with this. Keith hasn't been up when I finish them to proof. Make up what you want where there are bad mistakes!
