May 25, 1999 Day 10 We are leaving Scotland today. I would much rather stay, but there are other places in this world and so I must go and see what lies over the next hill. We are on the main motorway south of Glasgow. I know that we went by the town of Lockerbie, where the airplane disaster occurred several years ago. Also we went by the town where there was a shooting at a local school. I forget the name of that town. When you take the time to reflect on tragedies like these it makes you thankful for the life that God has given you.
Our first stop was at the Moffet Woolen Mill outlet at Gretna Green. Little did I know that this was right on the line between Scotland and England. I had held out on buying something for me because the money has been tight. On the other hand I knew that if I bought anything I wanted to buy it in Scotland and if I could something from Scotland. Well I ended up back in England and nothing really from Scotland (except some books). I felt like I had a group of friends and family over for a Sunday afternoon and than all of a sudden they were gone and I was left all alone. Do you know what I mean... that empty house feeling? At any rate Gretna Green!
Gretna Green is the place where couples come to get married real quick (elope). At one time all you had to do is find a minister and say I do and start enjoying your marriage. The English Government tried to make it harder because of all of the English that were going up there to get married real quick like. So they said that you had to have witnesses but that didn't slow things down they just brought their friends. Next they had to have lived in the City 3 weeks before they could get married in Gretna Green but that didn't seem to slow them down. Next they had to have as witnesses friends who were from the town 3 weeks or more but all they would do is get the local candle maker or baker to witness. In the end the government just had to back off. Gretna Green is the place to get married and sad to say I missed my chance when going through but I wouldn't mind trying again sometime.
Next we went to Grasmere were William Wordsworth lived. From there we took another boat and a train through some beautiful country. a couple of hours later the bus picked us up and on we went to Liverpool. Nothing stands out on the boat and train ride that I can mention. It was a nice change of scenery would have to be the main thing.
Once in Liverpool we went to our hotel called the Adelphi. This place was beyond words. It had the big sweeping stair cases like you see in the movies, when the Lady comes down in her formal dress and enters the room and everyone turns to look at her. We got some good video footage of it so that should help back these words. Keith and I skipped dinner with the group so that we could try and find another launderette. It took a bit of time to find one but our cab driver helped out. The cab driver who picked us up suggested a great place to eat by our hotel. Afterwards we roamed around a bit and than hit the room to get some more info out to people. Tomorrow we head into Northern Wales.
