It's pretty incredible, isn't it?  In this example, the quality still looks very good at 50, and even 30 percent.  It depends on the graphic how much you can compress and still have it "look good".  In general, text on a white background can be compressed less than, for example, a photograph such as this.  You'll get a feel over time for how much to compress or not.
